Clay’s Loop: Prologue
Did you hear your son? The kid wants to be a spaceman.[x]
this is a quick analysis into WHY Pocahontas (the Disney film) is a racist piece of trash. please, Asscreed fandom, do yourself a big favor and READ UP on the period that the new Assassin’s Creed game is going to be set.
this is American history, and this is important stuff. extreme ethnocentric views still pervade our culture, and because we have been ingrained with the idea of “Indians” being red-faced, feather headdress wearing savages, we dont apparently consider marginalizing a Native American character all that bad. think about it. this is the equivalent of taking an African character and comparing him or her to this:
are you guys beginning to figure it out now? if someone compared an African-American character to Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, people would get mad offended because its RACIST. just because our culture is infused with this sort of stuff doesnt mean that you personally have to cater to marginalizing a group of peoples into something like Pocahontas. please dont let me down, fandom. read up about native american culture (i believe that press releases say that Connor belongs to the Mohawk tribe, so even more specific!) and if you feel like you just have to draw him, do your research about culture, clothing, and practices. portray him in a way that is true to his heritage. dont shove him into a feather headress and call him Pocahontas, alright? just…. dont.
It’s funny, eh? When Native Americans and Afro-Americans are brought into context, suddenly everyone demands respect, but when the Arabic and Islamic cultures are bastardized to no end in ACI fanarts, everything is okay.
Maybe, just maaaybe, you could feel offended in behalf of a culture that isn’t yours.
But wait! The american media still says that Muslims are bad and that everything that has to do with the Arabic culture is forbidden and horrible and violent and whatnot.
It’s okay, guys. I can’t judge you. You’re just choosing what kind of ethnocentrism you want to fight.
You horrible bunch of hypocritical people.
Before you’re so quick to judge and hurl insults, you might do well to know that this was posted because it was timely, and samesaid tumblr user sushiandpie has said the same thing about Altaïr and the Masyaf assassins, just as countless other people have.
If Connor had been any other nationality or creed, and was treated like this, I would be pissed off as such a member of the fan community. Since this is specifically native tribes, who have been treated horribly no matter what nation you’re speaking about, it’s especially bad. If Connor had been a Aborigine, say, I would’ve screamed just as loudly and signal boosted just as much.
This issue is frustrating and I hope people can use this opportunity to educate themselves instead of behaving like immature children (in general, judging by some of the horrible responses to this post). Thank you.
So apparently because I was not in AC fandom when Altair and Ezio were introduced, I am a bad person because I didn’t also mention Altair and Ezio and the stereotypes they have been drawn with. This makes me just horrid because I focused on a group of peoples and not on the entire worldwide issue of racism in general? Jesus Fucking Christ. Listen. I wrote that PSA about Native Americans because Native Americans are one of the most marginalized and stereotyped groups of people in our history. The fact that I wrote it about a specific culture group who is now in fandom radar and not on other groups that have possibly been targeted by racist remarks is a totally moot point. Our ethnocentrism towards Native Americans is STILL HAPPENING. In 2012. I was born and raised in Cleveland and guess what? Our baseball team’s mascot is fucking CHIEF WAHOO:
The fact that people are GETTING AWAY WITH THIS is whats disgusting. Racism is bad FOREVER AND ALWAYS. I made the PSA because that is what is big news currently in the fandom. I am addressing current behavior in the fandom. If I had been available and in the AssCreed fandom when people started fucking with other cultures, I would have gladly addressed that too. And here’s the thing. Saying that I shouldn’t talk about the disgusting amounts of racism that exist for Native Americans and then bothering to compare EZIO of all people to what native tribes have had to experience is just stupid levels of ignorance. Italians never had to be forcefully removed from their lands because foreign settlers wanted it. Italians were never given smallpox infested blankets ON PURPOSE to kill them off. Italians weren’t corralled into reservations and basically penned off. Italians weren’t put under restrictive government laws forbidding them from practicing their religions and cultures under threat of death. Italians weren’t forced into Christianity so they would be more “normal” and “civilized.” Faulting me because I didn’t call the fandom out for also being a racist about Altair and Ezio is kind of disgusting. If Altair was put into the roll of say, Disney Aladdin, as many times as I have seen Connor already slapped into a nondescript headdress in art or called Pocahontas (and this is less than a week after Connor has been introduced mind you) I would have said something about that as well. Pardon me for not comparing a white male banking family Italian with a character whose entire cultural history post-1600s was nothing but marginalization and racism.
And excuse you for thinking that the treatment of a group of peoples is “blowing things out of proportion” because I didn’t extend racism to white people. The idea that we should “just shut up about racism” is what is fucking up peoples cultures and making us into ethnocentric pigs and is making racism a problem. Not the fact that I decided to discuss Native Americans and not bring to the table every other racist thing this fandom has decided to do. I am not dismissing the fandom on all other charges of racism. I am making a point to try to let people know why a certain behavior is inappropriate BEFORE it gets too bad.
I knew it was going to happen, but bullshit like this makes me sick. Signal fucking boost.
if you dont know why calling a Native American character "Pocahontas," even jokingly, is disgustingly offensive, please click this link »
